Thank God It's December...wasn't there a movie by that name?!? If not, you could make one about the last 30 days at cj's radio olio. Due to circumstances, the new playlist at the olio represents a shift of sorts. But first, here's the Artistes whose creations have been added to the existing sounds and stuff
: Alan Lomax - Albert Brooks - Albert King - the Andrews Sisters - Andy Williams - Artists Against Apartheid - Big Star - Bill Cosby - Bing Crosby - the Black Keys - Bob and Ray - Bob B. Soxx and The Blue Jeans - Brother Claude Ely - Carl Reiner - Cat Mother and the All-Night Newsboys - Dame Edith Evans - David Bowie - Dinah Shore - Doris Day - Duke Ellington - Dylan Thomas - Elvis Presley - Enrico Caruso - Ervin Webb - Firesign Theatre - F-Minus - Frank Zappa - Fritz Kreisler - Gary U.S.Bonds - George Carlin - George Johnson - Geraldine Farrar - Ginger Rogers ans Chorus - Graham Chapman - Helen Hayes - Ian Martin - Ice Cube - Jefferson Airplane - Jello Biafra - Jerry Clower - Jim Nabors - Johnny Cash - Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge - Jonathan Miller - June Carter - Len Spencer - Lena Horne - Lord Lawrence Olivier - Marcia Ball - Mel Brooks - Michael Palin - Monty Python - National Lampoon - Nirvana - NOFX - Orson Welles - Phil Hatman - President John F. Big list.
Recently the RIAA was in communication with Live365 about webcasts that supposedly weren't following the Rules under both U.S.Law and Contractual Agreements. Although there was no questioning of any aspect of cj's radio olio, I decided that any tracks that could be legally iffy ought to be dropped from the webcast. The vast majority of tracks dropped were spoken word excerpts from various media. Some of my favorite bits are gone. The good news is that I was beginning to feel that the playlist structure, independent of the tracks in it, was getting old and confining. The changes will make the playlists a little less predictable and therefore more in the spirit that the station began with almost 4 years ago. Other than a few less spoken word tracks (and a few more xmas songs than, say, in June), there won't be any big differences. it will still be the same cj's radio olio, with the same wide variety of Music and Stuff. So don't fret: I won't be putting a piece of coal in your ears...errr, somehow that didn't come out right. But I promise I won't do that...or change the olio into anything other than a better version of itself.
And Thanks to you for listening (and reading). Nearly 4 years on, and I'm still amazed that someone other than myself likes this. Y'all are cool.
Love and Peace, Clarence

Eddy Guerrero was found dead this morning in his hotel room. He was 38. It appears to be a heart attack. Eddie was one of the finest wrestlers alive. He was fast, athletic, & great on the microphone. The strongest characteristic of Eddie was his Heart. He alwaysd gave the crowd his best, & brought a joie de vivre to the ring that few have ever matched.
He also was a recovering substance abuser, who had gotten his life back on track, his family back, & his pride back. He was, no, he Will Be a becon to those who have problems in life to show that you CAN earn your way back to a place of pride in your world.
He was a member of a multi-generational wrestling family. My prayers go out to his family, & to the millions of fans like me who are stunned by this news. God Bless Eddy, we'll miss you.

Celebrate John Peel Day with the olio!

Thursday, October 13, 2005, has been declared John Peel Day by the BBC. John Peel was a DJ on the BBC, & on pirate radio before that, for over 35 years. His taste, & his ability to embrace new forms of music, along with his skills as a Broadcaster, made him a legend, and a Hero to me.
On October 13, at 1200 GMT (7am USCDT), repeated at 2300 GMT (6pm USCDT), cj's radio olio will run a special show in honor of Mr. Peel. It will consist of many of my most-favorite tracks. I hope you will join me.

cj's radio olio's Top Twenty Five is Unleased!
A few days late (but never last), the new cj's radio olio Top Twenty Five (plus 5) is now availible at the usual place: http://www.geocities.com/claren44/toptwentyfive. As has been usual in the 5 month history of the Top 25+, almost no tracks are duplicated from month to month. Meanwhile, this month it helped to be named Johnny, or derivations of Johnny. Four artistes with that first name made the list. Also, there is a tendency towards pre-1980 music, although Bllix, Andrew Bisset, & Cheese on Bread raise the flag for Modern-er music...I'm sorry, Mr. Webster, for creating such a deformed word.
Thanks for voting, & Please vote again to have your opinion heard next month!
Love & Peace, Clarence

ps: I tweaked the site's color scheme...check it out & let me know your opinion at olioradio (at) gmail.com

In Houston, a group of folks got together & came up with an idea: Hey! Why don't we create a low power FM station for the People living at the Astrodome? And provide them with FM Radios? We can broadcast hourly updated info on everything from how to ride the Houston Metro bus system (that'll take 'em awhile to master!Wink ) to how to get their kids enrolled in local schools. Plus, the refuge...I mean Temporary Residents at the Dome could listen to music & get their minds off their situation for a little while.
So this group of people got OKs & Encouragement from the Mayor of Houston, the Governor of Texas, the Red Cross, FEMA, the Harris Co. Dept. of Health & Human Services, the FCC, and also got a lot of donations to buy the radios, batteries for the radios, equipement, etc. They were all ready to put it in Wednesday...then R.W. Royall Jr., the incident commander of the Joint Information Center -- the group temporarily governing the operations of the Astrodome campus -- showed up:
http://www.wired.com/news/hurricane/0,2904,68806,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_7
I've seen a lot of self-important pathetically useless Morons in Appointed Positions of power in Houston/Harris County before, but this guy truly takes the cake. As someone who has heard the "No! Seriously! We DID Upgrade it this time! (Not like the OTHER 27 times we said we did)" PA system in the Dome BEFORE it has sat virtually unused for the past couple of years, I can tell you that it's only good for measuring the near-infinite number of times the same sound wave comes bouncing by. As a domed roof on a many-stories tall round cylinder made of concrete & iron 40 years ago, it's bloody impossible to actually UNDERSTAND anything said over the PA...& that's with Professional Announcers speaking into the mics, not some poor volunteer who has never used one in their life.
I hope that R.W. Royall Jr. gets what he deserves...put him INSIDE one of those speakers at the Dome for 12 hours listening to a CD of Harry Carey calling a Cubs win over the 'Stros.
Love & Peace, Clarence
UPDATE: As of Thursday, they are trying to get an OK to set up the station outside the Dome.
Mr. Royall's regular title is chief of emergency operations with the Harris County Fire Marshal's office.
Also, the unofficial word is that ALL temp residents of the Dome have to be gone by Sept. 18th. The Texans' opening home game is that date & the NFL Stadium was built on part of the Dome's parking lot. Oh brother. Exclamation
Se the pics taken of the Dome & it's Residents here: http://flickr.com/photos/ioerror/sets/905698/
These faces could be you or your family.

I want to remind everyone of the olio's Content Rules: if it sounds good, I'll put it in the playlist. I don't edit tracks to cut out any language, and I don't keep tracks off the stream due to ideas or imagery. The tracks you hear on cj's radio olio don't reflect any particular point of view. In the 100+ years of recorded sound, there have been performers (or occasionaly whole genres of music) that today we as a Society would not endorse or support. But, I feel that to ignore them completely would be to give a false version of History. I won't do that. It would be easier to get more listeners if I cut out certain tracks, and that's fine if that's what you are looking for. And I'd be lying if I said that I didn't want to have more listeners. But that's not what I started this webcast for three and a half years ago. I started it to share my eclectic tastes in music. And that's what cj's radio olio is about and will continue to be about. Remember what one of my Heroes, R.D.Davies said: "It's only music, only jukebox music".
Love and Peace.

R.I.P. Nick Kilroy

(background music - Pouring Water on a Drowning Man /James Carr)

Nick Kilroy started one of the first mp3blogs, gabba/POD. He had the kind of absolute belief in the power of music that made him seem like a friend of mine, despite the fact that we probably never were within several thousand miles of each other and never communicated by mail, email, phone, etc. We communicated by music. His enthusiasm would spark mine. I'd listen to a track he posted at gabba/POD & say, "How'd he know this is just what I wanted to hear?". Or "I hate this, but I see what Nick liked about it.". Nick Kilroy passed on a few days ago.

The miracle of the Internet is people with absolute love of something sharing that love with the world. The sad thing is saying goodbye to one of them. Farewell Nick.

Philip Sherburne (http://phs.abstractdynamics.org/archives/004954.html)
says all this beautifully.

Good News to announce for those who are annoyed by annoying pop-ups:
no more pop-ups on the olio's Geocities website!
Through a small financial arrangement, www.geocities.com/claren44/radio (& all other pages on my site) are Ad Free! Nothing to block the upper right of your monitor again. :)

In other olio news, if you use any of these online webblog directories, Feed Burner, Feedster, BlogDigger, Moreover, Blo.gs, Syndic8, My Yahoo!, Blog Rolling, Technorati, PubSub, or BlogStreet, they will now all be notified (via PingOMatic) when the olio blog (Words to Hear Music By @ claren44.blogspot.com), it's Atom feed (http://claren44.blogspot.com/atom.xml), & it's RSS feed (http://www.geocities.com/claren44/olio.xml) are updated. Cheri Smithson has a great idea. She's asked that February 1st be (unofficially) declared National 'Photography in the Age of Homeland Security' Day. Take photos on the 1st of highways, overpasses, parks, bridges, canals, rivers, and other Public Places owned by the People of your Locality, State, or the USA.

This does NOT mean sneak onto an Air Force base or something similarly stupid. Public areas are owned by us & we take pictures of them for any number of purposes: historical (both general & family), beauty, as background, business, etc. But, in some parts of the country, you can be threatened or hauled in & your private property (camera & film) can be taken from you for taking a photograph of a Public Place. As a historically-minded person, this is insane. If someone is taking pics of a secret item or area, lock 'em up & try them on spying charges. But, do NOT tell me that I can't take a photo of the 22nd Ave. Overpass here in Meridian because I MIGHT be a spy or a Terrorist who could use that pic (there's thousands of postcards they could buy at a Flea Market with the same pic on it) to disrupt this country.

Security Forces - do your jobs: catch the bad folks. Leave me to take my photos of Public Spaces.
Love & Peace, Clarence
