Life (for Some) in the US in 1970

"They Bombed in Houston", a powerful audio documentary from early 1971, will be played on OlioRadio starting at 6pm Wednesday August 18th. It was a rarity: a documentary produced by a Commercial radio station (KAUM) about attacks against a non-Commercial radio station(KPFT) in their same market.

During 1970 & early 1971, a systematic campaign of Harassment,Threats, & Bombings were directed against people in Houston,TX who committed the 'crimes' of:
Growing their hair long,
Believing the Freedom of Religion meant you could choose to believe in an unpopular religion,
Believing that Freedom of Speech meant you could publicly make unpopular statements.
For this, they were verbally & physically harassed, threatened with guns & even a hunting arrow through the front door of a legally-operating business,
& their businesses were fire-bombed & dynamited, including twice a FCC-approved, legally-operating licensed radio station.
This is how it was in many places in the USA during the late-60's to early-70's. It wasn't all Peace & Love & Freedom. It occasionally was War in the USA.

This documentary Includes voices from all sides. It will open your eyes, or remind you of how it was in The Real World, not the paisley haze that popular histories make it out to have been.

Johnny Maestro, lead singer of first The Crests & later The Brooklyn Bridge, passed away March 24th at the age of 70:

Alex Chilton, of the bands The Box Tops & Big Star as well as solo recordings, has died in New Orleans tonight. He was an original. From 60's bluesy pop to 70's Power Pop to...well, all over the map & back again, Alex Chilton was an American Original. Bless his wife & son.

Located in Jackson, this station's signal reached a large portion of the state, & was even carried on cable tv systems such as ours in Meridian. The heyday of 'JDX-FM was the late Sixties into the Seventies, so that's the era for the selected music & comedy played in the Tribute.

Webcaster Settlement Act of 2009 Passes

The Webcaster Settlement Act of 2009 has been passed by both the U.S.House & U.S.Senate, & is now awaiting Pres. Obama's signature. (link:Webcaster Settlement Act passes
When it is signed into law, there will be an additional 30 days for any webcaster groups who have Not reached agreement with Sound Exchange for a royalty structure (through either 2010, or it can be extended as far as 2015) for the Copyright (or Performance) Royalties. The groups with no specific agreements include: interactive streamers (Pandora), pure Webcasters (no over-the-air component), aggregaters (Live365, representing the vast majority of it's customers, who have Personal Webcaster packages.), religious broadcasters (those not privy to the agreement between SX & NAB), and others.
Lord, I don't ask for a lot, but PLEASE get us an agreement that gives Live365 (the service used for the past 7+ years by OlioRadio & thousands of other Webcasters) a fighting chance not only to survive but to grow. Without a specific agreement, we're trapped under the CRB decision of 2007, for ridiculously high rates through 2010, and the process has begun for those same fine folks to stick it to us for the period 2011-2015...opps, I mean for the CRB to come up with a fair and equitable decision for the 2011-2015 time period.

No matter your Religion (or lack of it), let us pray...

A Committee of the U.S. House Lies to Our Faces

Watched the archived Webcast of today's House Judiciary Committee markup session. It was almost all about the Performance Rights Act (making am/fm stations pay copyright royalties for over-the-air music). They now have the text of HR 2344 (the Webcaster Settlement Act of 2009) online. It's tiny. The bill (HR2344) simply extends the deadline for agreements between SX & webcasters not covered under existing agreements to 30 days after the bill becomes law...

In other words, it's a last chance for Live365, Pandora, & other webcasters to get SX to modify the Copyright Royalty Rates ordered to by the Copyright Royalty Board through 2010, & to make agreements to extend out as far as 2015...

In other words, the Judiciary Committee of the U.S.House doesn't care about small, medium, or large Internet Webcasters. It's a bone thrown to us to decieve us into thinking these "Representatives" care. They don't (except for Zoe Lofgren, who is fighting a brave fight for us). This committee appears to be made up of a lot of 'Flashing 12:00's' who profess "concerns" about webcasters and small broadcasters but believe that "instructing the CRB" to treat everyone fairly is all that's necessary.
Small Terrestrial Broadcasters, Welcome to Our Nightmare. Run while you can, or stand & fight alongside us as we are beaten, but never defeated.

Yep, on February 1st, OlioRadio will mark seven years of webcasting. It seems like only yesterday that I started streaming recordings over the Intertubes through Live365.com...sigh...[Insert annoying memories of an Elder Geek Here]

To celebrate, I, Clarence Jones (owner-operator and Chief bottle-washer of OlioRadio), promise you a new era of transparency. I've put together a 4 hour (3 hours and 40 minutes for Live365 VIPs - no ads!) special revealing some of MY personal favorite recordings. Finally, I'm giving you a peek at some of my deep-down most-loved tracks, stuff I'd want on a 'desert island' disc...er, along with a disc-player...and electricity or a large supply of batteries.

I take the plastic wrap off this special show at Midnight tonight (that's 12:00am Feb.1 US CST, 6:00am GMT). But do not despair if you can not listen tonight! Yes all eleven volumes of "The Complete Motown Singles" (year by year) are availible for $59.99 each. Considering that you cannot find the cds on Amazon for that cheap, it's worth the only-128k bitrate quality. After all, they sound better than they did on the (AM) radio originally. And Universal FINALLY did a great job on remastering the Motown vaults.

What some individual gems? How about Diana's swan song to the Supremes, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", in it's full-length 6 minute & 18 second glory (volume 10)...or the cleanest "I Second That Emotion" by Smokey and The Miracles that you've ever heard (volume 7)...well, you can see for yourselves. And of course, you can pick-and-choose the tracks you want for 99 cents each.

I somehow missed this:
Edie Adams, Tony-winning stage actress and widow of Ernie Kovacs, died last Wednesday (Oct.15th) at age 81.

She was an amazing person. When Ernie died in 1962, she found out that he was over half a million dollars in debt. She worked every job she could get for a year to both pay those off and finance her legal fight for custody of her two step-daughters. She had a Julliard-trained operatic voice, then married a mad genius and spent the rest of her life keeping his legacy alive (& in existance- for dcades few cared if kinescopes & videotape from the 40s & 50s survived, but she did).
She's with Ernie now, so she's happy.

The Listeners to OlioRadio have spoken! Again! The latest OlioRadio Top 25 Tracks list is now online at olioradio.net/toptwentyfive. These are the top-rated recordings as voted by listeners (between August 4th and September 3rd, 2008)..

As always, the Top 25 is pretty darned eclectic. From the past two decades come Lyle Lovett, Dread Zeppelin, Mosquitos, and Marcia Ball's release from earlier this summer (well, summer in the Northern Hemisphere). Then, from the 80s there's Warren Zevon (live!) and Time Zone, while the 60s and 70s give us Laurie Johnson, The Mamas and The Papas, and George Carlin. But, also loved were Prince Albert Hunt's Texas Ramblers, the Canadian Band of The Allied Expeditionary Force, and (not an aria from one of his operas, but the voice of the man himself) Giacomo Puccini, all from the era of wax cylinders and 78s.

How does your taste in music run? Mine runs in cycles. I'll listen to primarily (but not exclusively) one genre, and after some days, or weeks, my listening changes to another genre or era. Sometimes related, frequently unrelated...to anything. lol
This is why you may sense patterns in the tracks I add to OlioRadio. One time there may be a fair amount of Sixties Garage Band, another time Drum'n'bass could be most prominent. This year I keep ragging myself that I'm adding too many well-known artists. And the next update (when it comes...and it IS coming :-)) may look too Mainstream. But, Popular Artists are Artists too. And I try to add songs that are less familiar or play performances that are unique.
And, I suppose, anyone who likes Bailey's Lucky Seven, Public Image Ltd., the Canadian Band of the Allied Expeditionary Force, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, and The Northstar Session (all of whom were among the artistes added in the most recent update) ain't a great judge of what's "mainstream".

As usual, Listeners tend to vote for older recordings, although, in a playlist spanning the entire 20th & early 21st century, "older" takes on a different meaning. Perhaps I should say "recordings from the last 15 years". Anyways, any list of top rated tracks that includes Robert Johnson, William Jennings Bryan, Tim Curry (NOT from Rocky Horror), Washboard Sam, Ray Stevens, and the Warner Bros. (and, the Warner Sister) is true to the eclecticism at the heart of OlioRadio.

Miss me? Well, I'm back!

Oy!
After paddling against the current on a very brown stream in order to catch up with a new playlist on OlioRadio (still working on that) and a thousand other things online, I found myself at the start of this week facing:
a) A "Stay-cation" (taking vacation time but staying at home),
b) A looooong list of tasks around the house (generated by my Mom),
c) My internet connection going out.
Of course, the most frightening of these was c). :-) And here's the kicker: Comcast couldn't schedule a service call until July 2nd. Yup, no blogs, no podcasts, no nothin' until July 2nd.
Luckily for me, the neighbor across the street had a service call (for a cable tv problem) this morning. Doubly lucky, my 81-year-old Mom is nosey, and walked across the street to ask the serviceman if he was there to fix an internet connection prob with our neighbors (no) and to tell him that we had that type of prob & that I was told it would be July before they could fix it. Ten minutes later, the guy had fixed the neighbor's glitch, & fifteen minutes after that he had restored me to The Land Where Others Twittr. I'm happy that my Mom's gregariousness (sic?) saved Comcast fuel costs (didn't take much to drive the 50 feet from their driveway to ours) and having to only credit us with 6 days of no service (as opposed to 18 days if the July 2nd appointment had stood). More importantly, I missed being online. It's become part of my identity. I'm not consumed by it, but it is a valuable part of my life. I also want to thank all the Comcast call center folks I've interacted with over the past week. Each one was polite, helpful, & seemed to enjoy assisting customers. This is rare and much appreciated.

Now, one of these days I've got to update that station playlist...

Forty years ago Robert Francis Kennedy was shot while campaigning for the Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States. It feels like a lifetime ago. I fell asleep with my tv on (& the volume very low so that my parents wouldn't know it was on), and I woke up in the middle of the night to newsmen speaking in hushed tones. I know I must have slept during the following several days, during his fight for life, during the train trip, during the viewing. But I don't remember sleeping. I only remember crying. And I still cry today at the memory of that night and those days that followed.
But I also remember your flaws, your faults, your humor, your compassion, your love, and your lasting works that have changed for the better the lives of so many.

Two talented folks from here in Meridian,MS have left us the last 24 hours.

Paul Davis, singer-songwriter of the late 70s/early 80s hits "Cool Night", "'65 Love Affair", and "I Go Crazy" among others, died of a heart attack this morning here in Meridian at age 60:

Danny Federici paased away on last Thursday night after a 3 year battle with Melanoma. He played organ and accordion in The E Street Band, and had played keyboards with Bruce Springsteen since 1968. Respect and Love to his family & friends.
Here is a link to the announcement on Bruce's site and, down just a little in the left column, is some video of Danny's special appearance with the band in Indianapolis on March 19th: brucespringsteen.net.
I'll remember him on the '76 and '78 tours, putting out beautiful sounds from behind the Hammond organ. "Now you see him, Now you don't...Phantom Dan Federici!"

In 1959, three brothers who had first worked together over 40 years earlier did so for the last time. Leonard, Adolph, and Julius Marx( aka Chico, Harpo, and Groucho) performed in a tv pilot, "Deputy Seraph". The plot had Chico and Harpo as angels, with Groucho as their supervisor. The pilot could not be finished because no insurance company would cover Chico due to his heart trouble.
I'm as big a Marx Brothers fan as anyone, but I never thought that I would ever see even one frame of "Deputy Seraph". The film-to-video transfer isn't great, the film itself probably is/was falling apart, and then it had to be converted to Flash. Thank You to everyone who helped make this unfinished work availible. It's one last look at the Marxes before time took them away.

On January 2, 2008, OlioRadio will be closed. Major budget stresses are too strong for me to be able to re-up when my present package runs out.

After nearly 6 years here, there's no way to express the depth of my feelings. I can only say Thank You to the Musicians who created the recordings I've played. Your style & talent are amazing, & I'm honored to have extended your reach in a small way. Also Thanks to my Listeners who have put up with mega-bizarro sets, badly-prepped tracks, & all the other. I thought that there were folks elsewhere in the world who would enjoy music & other recordings from early Sousa marches to the newest IndiePop; y'all proved it.

All at Live365, past & present, deserve all our praise. The dedication & good humor of the employees of Live365 has always amazed & delighted me. You are a Class Act, & I know that greater success is coming.

I don't know what to say to this Community of Webcasters. I'd list everybody I want to single out, but I doubt that the board's software can take a multi-page post. lol Paraphrasing The Duke: I Love You Madly. And I will miss you so much.

Until Jan. 2, OlioRadio will still be pumping out the ones & zeros of over 100 years of recordings.

And she and her family are dealing with enormous medical bills.

You can see the beginnings of the effects of Sid's addictions. He's lost a fair amount of weight since "Your Show of Shows", & he covers himself wonderfully when he flubs a line. Sid barely has a line through most of the sketch. But, when you have a red-hot Charlton Heston (just over 2 weeks before the premiere of Ben-Hur) playing opposite you (along with Audrey Meadows & Howard Morris) there's only so much time. Heston is actually funny in the part, hamming a bit & playing the laughs well. I'm Impressed!

Webcasters Amp Up Independent Musicians

Foster City, CA—Live365 Inc. recently completed a study of its 2006 Internet radio broadcasts which revealed that nearly 56% of its broadcast music comes from independent artists and labels and not major record labels. This statistic underscores how Internet radio helps promote new, emerging artists while also expanding musical diversity as the AM/FM radio industry consolidates station ownership and play formats.

Mark Lam, CEO of Live365 pointed out: “Only 10-13% of AM/FM music is from independent artists and labels so we spin FIVE times as much Indie music as AM/FM. Our 10,000 DJ’s are opening up the diverse spectrum of musical genres and artists while AM/FM program formats narrow it. I see this statistic as a genuine reflection of what music DJ’s will play when the choice is driven by what people like rather than profits.”
